IB Results 2018

The Principal of King William's College has congratulated students after they achieved one of the School's most successful ever set of results.

Ten Upper Sixth students - nearly a fifth of the year group - studying the IB Diploma achieved 40 or more points out of a maximum of 45, putting them in the top three per cent of students worldwide.

Ffinlo Wright scored 44 points, placing him in the world's top one per cent, while Aiden Hawker, Bakir Ovčina and Tea Višnjić all gained 43 points.

The School achieved impressive results throughout the year group with only two students falling short of the 24 points required for the Diploma to be awarded.

As a year group of 55 students, the Upper Sixth gained an average of 33.9 points (compared to 32.6 in 2017) – similar to a typical offer from Bristol, Edinburgh or Newcastle universities - and the university picture is excellent.

Students have also gained places at many of the top Russell Group universities including King's College London, LSE, St Andrew's, UCL and Warwick, as well as places at universities in Dubai, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the US.

Tom Padley will continue his education by studying Medicine at Liverpool University and Dara Milkova has secured her place for Medicine at Imperial College London.

The International Baccalaureate is an internationally recognised qualification known for its breadth with students studying six subjects together with an Extended Essay and a course on the Theory of Knowledge. It is taught in 4,500 schools in 140 countries around the world.

Reflecting on the international nature of the Sixth Form, Joss Buchanan, Principal of King William's College, said:

"I am delighted with this set of results, the third most successful we have had since introducing the IB back in 2002 and a huge achievement for so many."

"This has been a big year for the College and after such a successful inspection report in the spring we are delighted to be ending the year with such a very strong set of IB results. The students worked consistently hard throughout their time in the Sixth Form and they thoroughly deserve their success. They have also done exceptionally well with their university applications and once again it demonstrates how highly the universities regard the IB given its breadth and skills based approach. The IB celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and these results confirm that we are one of the largest and most successful IB schools in the British Isles."

Mr Buchanan added:

"I would also like to thank my colleagues in the Common Room for all the support they gave the students and particular thanks to the Sixth Form team, led by Anya Morgans, who have guided the students through the complexities of the university application process. That work is ongoing and we are currently in touch with universities to support the students in their applications."
